Loin de l'univers cinématographique, Steve Carell a débuté dans la vie active en tant que postier. N'ayant pas la fibre administrative, il quitte son emploi après seulement quelques mois. Il tente aussi de rentrer en faculté de droit, mais lors de son entretien il se montre incapable de trouver une quelconque attirance pour le métier d'avocat. En 1991, il se décide à rejoindre la troupe de théâtre, spécialisée dans l'improvisation, The Second City, à Chicago. Cette année marque aussi ses débuts sur grand écran avec le rôle de Tesio dans La P'tite arnaqueuse. C'est cependant sur le petit écran que l'on retrouve par la suite Steve Carell. Après une petite pause au cinéma, et pendant laquelle il se consacre pleinement à ses rôles télévisuels, le comédien forme à nouveau un couple détonnant avec une autre figure du petit écran américain, Tina Fey pour Crazy Night, et apparaît en mari et père en pleine reconquête de sa femme dans Crazy, Stupid, Love, aux côtés du très en vogue Ryan Gosling. Il continue sa composition de dépressif l'année suivante pour Jusqu'à ce que la fin du monde nous sépare, dans lequel il part en road-trip apocalyptique avec Keira Knightley. S'il reste avant tout un acteur de comédie, Steve Carrel surprend en se glissant dans la peau d'un angoissant milliardaire dans Foxcatcher et d'un gestionnaire de fonds spéculatifs dans The Big Short : Le Casse du siècle.
