Il a emprunté de l’argent à Richard pour pouvoir se payer sa Hofner. Deacon est aussi chargé d’archiver tout ce qui concerne le groupe comme des coupures de journaux, des publicités mettant en vedette The Opposition. Ils donnent beaucoup de concerts à Leicester et ses alentours, lorsqu’en avril 1966, un nouveau membre, nommé Pete Bart, remplace le bassiste Clive Castledine. Le groupe pense que Clive a un niveau en dessous des autres. John Deacon, qui a acheté une basse EKO, reprend le poste immédiatement. Et comme le groupe a changé de formation, ils adoptent le nom de The New Opposition. En septembre 1966, John entre à la Beaucamp Grammar School de Leicester.
