Golden Lotus est basé, en partie, sur Jin Ping Mei, un célèbre roman érotique de la Chine ancienne. Li Han-Hsiang adaptée partie de l'histoire dans ce film, qui commence par Hsi Men Ching, un marchand prospère, courtiser Pan Chin Lien, la belle épouse d'un des habitants de la ville.
