Fidel Castro se fait remarquer par une opposition au régime dictatorial du président Fulgencio Batista qu’il juge inféodé aux États-Unis. En juillet 1953 il tente une première fois de renverser le régime de Batista.
En 1956, il part pour le Mexique où il rencontre Ernesto « Che » Guevara avec lequel il affine son projet. Le 20 juillet 1958 Fidel Castro est proclamé « Commandant en chef du Front Révolutionnaire Démocratique ».
