Deux femmes débutent une nouvelle année à l'université d'Ancaster. Jasmine est une étudiante de première année ordinaire originaire du lointain Tacoma et fait ses premiers pas timide à l'université. Gail est un membre établi du corps professoral d'Ancaster et vient d'être nommé "Master". Les deux femmes, afro-américaines, vont devoir faire face à des expériences plus que troublantes au sein de cette université majoritairement blanche de la Nouvelle-Angleterre.
