Diplômé en beaux-arts de l'University of Minnesota, Ron Perlman débute sa carrière sur les planches de New York, sa ville natale. C'est en 1981 qu'il se fait remarquer sur le grand écran avec un rôle quasi-muet dans La Guerre du feu de Jean-Jacques Annaud. Sa "gueule" fait une nouvelle forte impression dans Le Nom de la rose du même réalisateur cinq ans plus tard. En 1993, l'acteur collabore avec un jeune metteur en scène mexicain inconnu, Guillermo Del Toro, sur le film fantastique Cronos, puis enchaîne avec un petit rôle dans Romeo is Bleeding de Peter Medak. Victime expiatoire de L'Ultime souper en 1995, Ron Perlman croise le duo Caro-Jeunet la même année dans La Cité des enfants perdus où son physique inimitable fait encore frissonner. Deux ans plus tard, Jean-Pierre Jeunet, cette fois en solo, fait à nouveau appel à lui pour aller affronter les monstres d'Alien, la resurrection, après la parenthèse de L'Ile du docteur Moreau version Frankenheimer (1996). Plus discret dans les années qui suivent, Ron Perlman effectue un petit caméo pour Ken Loach dans Bread and Roses en 2000 et prête sa voix à l'un des héros de Titan A.E. la même année. Un an plus tard, fidèle à ses réalisateurs, il retrouve Jean-Jacques Annaud sous l'uniforme russe au milieu de la bataille de Stalingrad, puis rejoint à nouveau l'univers de Guillermo del Toro en 2002 avec Blade II. Après une apparition clin d'œil dans Les Looney Tunes passent à l'action pour Joe Dante (qui l'avait déjà dirigé dans La Seconde Guerre de Sécession en 1997), Ron Perlman obtient son premier "premier rôle" avec Hellboy adaptation d'un célèbre comic-book signée Guillermo Del Toro. Dans ce film, il campe sous un maquillage des plus impressionnants un démon aussi sympathique qu'indestructible, œuvrant pour le Bien. Un rôle qu'il reprendra en 2006 dans Hellboy 2. Il incarne également le deuxième personnage principal des Sons of Anarchy durant 6 des 7 saisons de cette série appréciée et violente. Après s'être livré à l'exercice du doublage à de nombreuses reprises tout au long de sa carrière, que ce soit pour des films d'animation, des séries animées ou même des jeux vidéo, Ron Perlman participe pour la première fois à un long métrage d'animation Disney en 2010 avec Raiponce, dans lequel il prête sa voix aux frères Stabbington. Il ne quitte pas tout de suite l'univers médiéval fantastique et tient ainsi le second rôle du Dernier des Templiers aux côtés de Nicolas Cage cette même année, en incarnant Felson, un valeureux soldat. En 2011, l'acteur campe deux personnages secondaires dans des films marquants : dans Conan, remake du film culte qui a lancé la carrière d'Arnold Schwarzenegger, et surtout dans Drive, thriller envoûtant extrêmement bien reçu et réalisé par le très doué Nicolas Winding Refn. Deux ans plus tard, le comédien retrouve deux personnes qu'il connait particulièrement bien : Guillermo Del Toro et Charlie Hunnam pour les besoins du blockbuster ultra attendu Pacific Rim.

Her path to becoming an actress had many turns. She had a degree in Mathematics, taught school until married, then became the first Texas female lawyer. Then she became a bilingual radio commentator. After her husband lost her fortune, she and her husband opened a bakery in Los Angeles. In the mid-1930s, Bates auditioned for and won the role of Miss Bates in a Pasadena Playhouse adaptation of Jane Austen's Emma. When she decided to continue working with the theatre group, she changed her professional name to that of the first character she played on stage. In 1939, she was introduced to Alfred Hitchcock, who cast her in her first major screen role, the vain dowager Mrs. Van Hopper, in Rebecca (1940). Bates appeared in more than sixty films over the course of the next thirteen years. Among her cinema credits are Kitty Foyle, Love Crazy, The Moon and Sixpence, Mr. Lucky, Heaven Can Wait, Lullaby of Broadway, Mister Big, Since You Went Away, Kismet, Saratoga Trunk, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, Winter Meeting, I Remember Mama, Portrait of Jennie, A Letter to Three Wives, On the Town, and Les Misérables.
