Joseph McGinty Nichol, dit McG, est un réalisateur, producteur de cinéma et de télévision et ancien producteur de disques américain, né le 9 août 1968 à Kalamazoo dans le Michigan. Il commence sa carrière dans l'industrie de la musique, réalisant des clips et produisant divers albums. Plus tard, il se fait connaître avec son premier film Charlie et ses drôles de dames, qui connaît le week-end d'ouverture le plus rentable pour un premier film à l'époque. Ensuite, il réalise plusieurs autres films, co-crée la série télévisée Fastlane et produit de nombreux programmes télévisés tels que The OC, Chuck et Supernatural. McG possède également une société de production, Wonderland Sound and Vision, fondée en 2001, qui supervise la production des films et émissions de télévision sur lesquels il travaille depuis Charlie's Angels : Les Anges se déchaînent !. Après des études de psychologie à l'Université de California-Irvine, Joseph McGinty Nichol fonde en 1993 le label musical G Recordings. Dès la fin des années 90, McG conjugue l'image et la musique en réalisant un court documentaire sur le groupe Korn (Korn : Who Then Now ?), puis de nombreux vidéo-clips pour des artistes tels que The Offspring (The Offspring Complete Music Video Collection), Cypress Hill (Cypress Hill : Still Smokin') ou Sugar Ray. A cette activité, qu'il poursuit même après avoir percé au cinéma, s'ajoute la réalisation de spots publicitaires pour de grandes marques (Coca-Cola, Gap...). C'est grâce à ses films dans les milieux musicaux et publicitaires et aux prix qu'il remporte que McG est repéré par l'actrice Drew Barrymore. En 2000, il est donc engagé pour mettre en scène Charlie et ses drôles de dames, version cinématographique de la série télévisée des années 70, portée par Cameron Diaz, Drew Barrymore et Lucy Liu. Trois ans plus tard, il retrouve les trois comédiennes pour de nouvelles aventures dans Charlie's angels - les anges se déchaînent. S'il se distingue également dans le domaine des séries télévisées - il est l'un des créateurs de Chuck, Newport Beach ou encore Supernatural -, McG s'essaye au drame en mettant en scène We Are Marshall (2006). Inspiré d'un fait divers sur le crash aérien d'une équipe de football américain, le film, porté par Matthew McConaughey, n'est toutefois pas distribué en France. McG retrouve le chemin des blockbusters avec Terminator Renaissance (2009), où il dirige notamment Christian Bale et Sam Worthington. Chargé de ressusciter la saga Terminator, McG plonge les spectateurs dans la guerre qui oppose le chef humain John Connor aux robots de Skynet. Ce nouvel opus, très attendu des fans, ne remporte toutefois pas le succès escompté et ne connait donc pas de suite. Dans un tout autre registre, le réalisateur passe à la comédie romantique sur fond d'action et d'espionnage avec Target (2012), un long métrage dans lequel deux agents de la CIA (les très en vogue Tom Hardy et Chris Pine) se disputent la même "cible" (Reese Witherspoon).
