Emily Robison (born Emily Burns Erwin on August 16, 1972) is an American songwriter, singer, multi-instrumentalist, and a founding member of the female country band The Chicks (fka Dixie Chicks). Though he eventually built a trademark reputation as a director of offbeat feature films, Noam Murro undertook a most circuitous route into Hollywood. Born in Israel, Murro originally trained as an architect in his boyhood town of Jerusalem, NY, then entered the advertising industry, with a lengthy tenure in the creative department of Gotham's Goldsmith/Jeffrey Agency. During that stint, he became known for his deft and original hand at directing promotional films via his own production banner, Biscuit Films (co-run with Shawn Lacy Tessaro); their clients included such brands as Saturn, E*Trade, and FreeAgent.com. In time, Murro and Tessaro migrated to the advertising-based production house Stiefel & Co., in Southern California, then set up a new production banner for themselves. In the years to follow, talk swirled of Murro's pending feature activity -- including, at one point, his plans to direct The Ring Two for DreamWorks (an assignment eventually handled by Hideo Nakata, the director of the original Japanese film) and the black comedy All Families Are Psychotic; however, Murro eventually took his first high-profile feature bow with the 2007 comedy Smart People. The film stars Thomas Haden Church, Dennis Quaid, and Sarah Jessica Parker, and concerns a professor (Quaid) who grapples with a new romance and the doings of a shady brother.

Il a réalisé trois longs métrages: Les Revenants (2004), Eastern Boys (2013) et 120 battements par minute (Grand Prix au 70e Festival de Cannes en 2017). Comme scénariste, il a notamment coécrit Entre les murs réalisé par Laurent Cantet, film qui lui a valu le César de la meilleure adaptation en 2009 pour le film. Après des études à Aix-en-Provence, il est formé à l'Institut des hautes études cinématographiques au début des années 1980 où il rencontre Laurent Cantet. Il est tour à tour monteur, scénariste et réalisateur. Avec Laurent Cantet, il a coécrit et monté le film L'Emploi du temps (2001), Vers le sud (2005) ou encore Entre les murs, film qui a reçu la Palme d'or du festival de Cannes 2008. En 2004, il sort son premier long métrage comme réalisateur, Les Revenants. Ce film qui inspirera la série homonyme de Canal+ est présenté en section Orizzonti à la Mostra de Venise. Son deuxième film sort en 2013 sous le titre Eastern Boys, dont il signe également le scénario et le montage. Ce long métrage est honoré du Prix Horizons du meilleur film à la Mostra de Venise 2013 puis reçoit plusieurs autres prix dans d'autres festivals internationaux. En 2016, il coécrit le troisième film de Rebecca Zlotowski, Planétarium. Son troisième long métrage, 120 battements par minute, est en compétition lors du Festival de Cannes 2017. Son film obtient le Grand Prix et trois autres récompenses annexes. Le film a véritablement créé l'événement du 70e Festival de Cannes, est sorti en France le 23 août 2017 et a récolté de nombreux prix tel que la Queer Palm, Out d’or de la création artistique, le Prix du meilleur Réalisateur au Festival Lumière... Le film reçoit de nombreux prix internationaux et est vendu à plus de 40 pays dans le monde. En 2019, il est membre du jury au Festival de Cannes sous la présidence d'Alejandro González Iñarritu. Il est membre du collectif 50/50 qui a pour but de promouvoir l’égalité des femmes et des hommes et la diversité dans le cinéma et l’audiovisuel.
