John Woo grandit à Hong Kong, où il commence sa carrière en tant qu'assistant réalisateur dès 1969. Il met en scène son premier film en 1973, The Dragon tamers, et devient un réalisateur prolifique touchant à tous les genres cinématographiques avant que Le Syndicat du crime en 1986 ne l'établisse comme un maître de l'action, spécialisé dans les thrillers ultra violents. A partir de 2002, John Woo s'essaie à deux nouveaux registres : le film de guerre avec Windtalkers, interprété par deux acteurs fétiches : Nicolas Cage et Christian Slater, la science-fiction avec Paycheck, l'adaptation cinématographique d'un roman de Philip K. Dick dans laquelle Ben Affleck tente de reconstituer son passé, et le cinéma médiéval chinois en 2009 avec l'épique Les 3 royaumes.

He is credited with developing and broadening the NBA's audience, especially internationally by setting up training camps, playing exhibition games, and recruiting more international players. Shihabi's native Arabic dialect is a form of Levantine Arabic.
